"You're running too much to philology, Billy," said Goodwin. "Do you make out the meaning of it?" "Sure," replied the philosopher of Fortune. "All languages come easy to the man who must know 'em. I've even failed to misunderstand an order to evacuate in classical Chinese when it was backed up by the muzzle of a breech-loader. This little literary essay I hold in my hands means a game of Fox-in-the-Morning. Ever play that, Frank, when you was a kid?" "I think so," said Goodwin, laughing. "You join hands all 'round, and--" "You do not," interrupted Keogh. "You've got a fine sporting game mixed up in your head with 'All Around the Rosebush.' The spirit of 'Fox-in-the-Morning' is opposed to the holding of hands. I'll tell you how it's played.

While on the run from U.S. authorities, O. Henry had to spend a season or so in Honduras at the beginning of the 20th century and this fun story of crooked foreigners and ambitious locals was oen of the results. The fact that its title is drawn from Through the Looking Glass is hardly surprising, for this master of dialogue, nuance, and the lives of little people would appear to be at home in this strangely warped country of "Anchuria." Literary connoisseurs will say that, in formulating magical realism, Garcia Marquez drew extensively from Faulkner. Maybe so, but he could just as easily have read O. Henry and gotten some of the same inspiration. This audio version is well-arranged, the narration clear and attractive.Product details

Cabbages and Kings O Henry 9781542669924 Books Reviews
This appears to be part of a series of books printed by Doubleday, Page & Co. containing most of O'Henry's short stories. Originally the books were printed between 1904 and 1919 by P.F Collier & Son. This particular collection was reprinted in 1922. I cannot be sure, but I believe the entire series was 12 books total. Each book in this 1922 series is titled by the first short story in the book, but there are always around 20 to 30 different stories in each book.
This volume, Cabbages and Kings, contains nineteen short stories in 312 pages The Proem By the Carpenter; "Fox-in-the-Morning"; The Lotus and the Bottle; Smith; Caught; Cupid's Exile Number Two; The Phonograph and the Graft; Money Maze; The Admiral; The Flag Paramount; The Shamrock and the Palm; The Remnants of the Code; Shoes; Ships; Masters of Arts; Dicky; Rouge et Noir; Two Recalls; and The Vitagraphoscope.
I looked it up on Wiki, and O. Henry spent at the most 6 months in Honduras, probably less. There is no evidence he spoke Spanish. So unless he were a prodigy of some sort, he would not be expected to learn or experience much of the real country during his short stay. And this book bears this out. There is nothing of Honduras in this book. It is unfortunate that the reader might conclude that the book arises out of some actual knowledge or experience of the country, or sympathy with its people, because that is decidedly not the case. And the author butchers what spanish he attempts. For that matter, the author's english is often absurd. Didn't Graham Greene's travels to Mexico result in works of enduring value? It's a pity the same can't be said of O'Henry in Honduras.
If you're sensitive to political correctness, don't read this book. You have to remember it reflects its time and many negative epithets were used to describe people of different ethnicities. If you can remember that it was written in the 1800's, you might enjoy it.
Breezy, well written book.
Wonderful, light, humorous turn of the century look at Honduran life
Just plain FUN.
So glad that I picked this up! Decided to give it a try after some sort of Wikipedia tangent, I think -- and this book is funny, interesting, romantic, and just well-written. Great prose, lovely descriptions of the tropical life of the banana republic of Anchuria and the lives intertwining within it. And oh, how it all comes together at the end!
