It is right before Christmas and a woman is burying her mother, the only mourner at her grave. She is 29 years old and has lived a miserable life of poverty and addiction. All she has left, once her mother dies, is her own determination, resolve "and the mission". What this mission is, serves as the marrow of this mystery.Shortly after Christmas, Chief Inspector Van Veeteren is trying to solve a difficult crime. A man has been murdered by two shots to the chest and two to his groin. By all accounts, the victim was mild mannered, somewhat boring, and had no enemies. There were no witnesses and the only clue there is to work with is that, prior to the murder, the victim's wife had several phone calls which consisted of the same piece of music being played each time. Soon, another man is murdered and Van Veeteren and his team go all out to find a connection between the men.
The team consists of several interesting characters. Each has a personal life that is examined as part of the novel. I have read several books in this series and this particular novel does not come up to some of the other books that feature the same characters. The writing is solid, the Swedish landscape is, as always, interesting and Van Veeteren is an old and wise soul.

I enjoyed it greatly.
I read a lot of mysteries and I especially like Scandinavian homicide inspectors so Inspector Van Veeteren is right up my alley. All the ingredients are here; a quirky protagonist, an interesting cast of supporting investigators (with the right amount of character development), great dark Scandinavian setting and a complex but compelling plot. Plus the bonus -- Hakan Nesser has a series of Van Veeteren novels, so if you like your first read, there are more to follow. Doesn't get much better than that.
This book, the fourth in the series lacks the sharpness and mystery of the first three. It was predictable as to the reasons for the murders. I still liked it and recommend it.
Even though the reader knows who the perpetrator is from the start, it’s still suspenseful. Inspector VV is always such an interesting character.
Hakan Nesser has produced a great "inverted" murder mystery where you meet the murder in the first chapter and spend the rest of the book following the police as they learn more. The book is not a Who-Dun-It, rather it is a Why-Dun-It.
I am a fan of Hakar Nesser, my first book of his being Mind's Eye. In Woman With Birthmark, it's Inspector Van Veeteren who is at the top of his game when men starting dropping dead with both a bullet to the head and a bullet to the nether region. It's January and Van Veeteren is cold and miserable, but not above solving this latest crime. Seems a young lady has not been listening nor playing well with others. The question is why. Why have these men been murdered? What do they have in common? What's with the mysterious music that was played to them over the phone in the weeks before they die? Will the murderer strike again? And finally, will Van Veeteren's team find her before it's too late for the next poor strapper?
In Nesser's proven, witty, and pithy style, Woman With Birthmark is a suspenseful mystery where the reader is somewhat sympathetic to the murderer. We learn a bit more about Van Veeteren's team in this one as well. This disturbing tale, and the implications of how what has happened in a person's past can shape their future is one you will be thinking about long after it is completed!
Every once in awhile you find an author and a series that takes you by surprise, and you want to read the entire series. This was the series for me. It is a slim volume, but highly packed with mental and physical anguish, murder and mayhem, and one of the best police crime teams I have come across.
The author, Hakan Nesser, knows his worth. The skillful writing is what places these police procedural/mystery/psychological thrillers at the top of my list. I read Hakan Nesser's latest book, 'The Cry of the Wolf' first and liked it so much , I ordered his first, second and third books.
As this book evolves the characters react, and the psychological suspense is overwhelming. One by one the clues are discovered, people are interviewed, little bits of information not deemed important at the time turn into the big 'get'. The fear, anguish and thrill of the hunt are all placed in perspective. The detail, the suspense and the plot keeps us spellbound. Chief Inspector Van Veeteren , is a man who is described as gruff and unpleasant by those who have met him, exasperating by his closest colleagues, and an intelligent, industrious detective by his superiors. He has closed 20 of his 21 cases, and That one that got away keeps him in check.
I absolutely love the humor that the author imparts in this book. Beside the dark drama of the world of a killer, Chief Inspector Van Veeteren, imparts wisdom to his colleagues, like finding the solution involves finding out the secrets of the dead. The team work, the badminton games with his colleague, his unusual family life, and his dedication to his job, makes this murder mystery/police procedural one of the best I have read in recent times.
In this storyline, a woman enters into the murder for revenge business. Upon her dying mother's request mshe has set out to eradicate all that were involved. Some of the story is told from her viewpoint, some from others involved, but most of the storyline belongs to Chief Inspector Van Veeteren. He is keen of mind, works with his team, and one by one the clues come together. Another mystery where the muderer is known, but who, when and where is the unknown, and will Van Veeteren find her.
Highly Recommend. prisrob 01-02-16
