I was interested mostly in his place in the battles of the Western theater and this book answers many of my questions about P.G.T Beauregard's leadership and interaction with A.S. Johnston at Shiloh and the evacuation of Columbus Ky. He was given short treatment in Shelby Foote's Narrative of the CW. The people of Charleston loved him for his defense of that city. His is a bit of an odd story due to his Louisiana Cajun upbringing. He made enemies with Jefferson Davis. He pushed for corp organization of the Confederate army early in the war. He'd have been the ideal CW general if he had not been so narcissistic and if he had filtered some of his grand strageditic schemes. This book fills a void in telling his story.Product details

On time and in good shape. Excellent reference book and a good read.
Well-written and researched work. One of the best biographies I have read. Could not put it down. Highly recommend.
Very good biography of an important figure in the War for Southern Independence and also very important after the War.
Biographies may, due to a series of reasons, become dull and hard to read through even if you are really interested in the particular character. This is absolutely NOT the case with this great book! General Beauregard's life path was fascinating on its own, and would provide a nice reading material even through a weak biographer. Now, T. Harry Williams is certainly among the greatest biographers of all times. These two ingredients make of this book a little treasure! The reader will not only be able to fully understand the General's personality, but will also travel with him to Mexico in the 1840's and get a full, detailed picture of the American operations there; s/he will also follow the development of the young army engineer just before the war, and, during the struggle, visit both the Eastern and Western theatres, understand precisely how the coastal defences in SC were conducted, etc. The general fought in his ardent and rather extravagant, 'Napoleonic' way to free his country, but his days do not finish with the final collapse of the Confederacy railroad management and lotteries are on the way. Highly entertaining, highly recommended!
Really enjoyed this biography. It was highly useful as background reading for a trilogy I set within the South during the war. I know firsthand how frustrating it can be to find conflicting accounts in source materials, so I especially appreciated the author's attempts to point out these instances and argue for the most likely middle ground. Very thorough. Excellent, interesting reading.
Very few books have been written about Beauregard and I just do not understand why. Many other lesser known Civil War characters have much more written about them. I had always wondered why he was not utilized more by President Davis in the prosecution of the war. Now I know why. Beauregard was just too egotistical.
This was originally published in 1955, so it is somewhat dated. However, this is nonetheless a very nice biography of Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, one of the small handful of "Full Generals" in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.
He was a complex, perplexing, and talented person. His pride led him to end up wasting a lot of time (and burning bridges) that accomplished little. For instance, his feud with President Jefferson Davis. He grew up admiring Napoleon (he was Creole, and spoke French for the first part of his life), and often developed battle plans during the Civil War that were Napoleonic in scope--and probably utterly impractical.
The biography does a nice job of laying out his early life and beginning to identify some of the personality traits that would be significant later on. His army career is well detailed, from West Point, to his engineering duties, to his important role in the Mexican War (he was one of a group of young officers, including Robert E. Lee, who were General Winfield Scott's eyes and ears).
Then, his role in the Civil War. The book does a nice job of chronicling some of his major successes--his leadership of the defense of Charleston, his key role in preventing Benjamin Butler and, later, Ulysses Grant from easily taking Petersburg. But there is also his ambiguous legacy from First Manassas (he was the operational commander and deserves credit, but his poorly configured orders, his wild-eyes strategic ideas, etc. raise one's eye brows), to Shiloh (an impractical attack plan), etc.
Thus, there were some great successes (Petersburg and Charleston), some ambiguous successes (First Manassas), a losing battle (Shiloh), and lots of political warfare with his government and other military officials.
His lot after the Civil War? He did well! The book does a nice job of describing his later career.
All in all, despite its age, this is a fair biography of a complex person. It is pretty critical of him at some points, but gives credit where it is obviously due. If interested in this fascinating figure, this is not a bad starting point. . . .
