There is no doubt 's Milller is a very good writer but to me what could have been an outstanding novel was stymied because of her misplaced intimates. We are given all the intimates of brickmaking, much , much more than I cared o know. I could get that info off the internet if I wanted. She could have used those words and added to the intimate feelings of her characters. Ewan kissed Laura and boom next chapter.......what did they feel about that kiss...those feelings. Kathleen gave up her baby...how did she feel about that. Swan would give his aunt and uncle an ear full then allow them to bully him. He allowed his uncle to bully him into leaving the brickyard to work on his aunts new house while his uncle caused havoc at the yard. Why would he do this. We don't know because we weren't privy to his feelings and thoughts.Tags : The Brickmaker's Bride (Refined by Love) [Judith Miller] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. In the clay-rich hills of the newly founded state of West Virginia, two families tentatively come together to rebuild a war-torn brickmaking business.

Ewan McKay has immigrated to West Virginia with his aunt and uncle,Judith Miller,The Brickmaker's Bride (Refined by Love),Bethany House Publishers,0764212559,Christian - Historical,Christian - Romance,Brickmakers,Brickmakers;Fiction.,Christian fiction,Love stories,Scots-Irish,Scots-Irish;Fiction.,Tygart Valley River (W. "The Brickmaker's Bride" is a historical novel set in 1868. The author described many details about how bricks were made, and she worked in historical details like how the recent Civil War affected the number of skilled laborers that were available for Ewan to hire.
I found the main characters interesting, but I felt like the story started in one direction and then headed in another. It seemed like a story about Ewan not having the high-class social skills need to get contracts for the brickyard and feeling not worthy of the Laura. Meanwhile, Laura thinks he won't want to marry her if he knew her secret. Ewan's situation didn't really change, but the story's focus changed to the troubles that Ewan has at the brickyard.
I was exasperated that Ewan was so self-righteous about his not pursuing Laura while someone else was courting her and then he's suddenly kissing her in the open at a work site. And then kisses her again before they start courting. And again before she agrees to marry him. But he's not very understanding toward a relative who is tempted by a handsome man.
Ewan also started out with a strong faith in God, yet he ended up more anxious about things than his unbelieving uncle. Finally, I was disappointed that the author often skipped scenes that she'd built up to. For example, Ewan is worried how his uncle will take some news and Laura promises to support him during the confrontation and...we skip that whole confrontation. That scene would have developed and bonded the characters, but I suppose it would have been difficult to write well.
There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this book to fans of historical novels.
The novel had potential with the set of characters and premise of a young man struggling to establish a business to help his family come to America, but it just didn't deliver. I'm not sure what Ewan should have done in response to his uncle's gambling and cavalier attitude and brash interference in the workings of the brick business, but the interaction of these characters wasn't satisfying. Aunt Margaret made a too perfect antagonist because she didn't have a single redeeming quality to make her appear more human.
To me the plot seemed to creep along with an over abundance of mundane matters and a shallow characterization of the most important people. The love story could have been special- good bones, but not much flesh and a little boring.
It was a fun story in the beginning. Then it got frustrating. Two characters are always self-centered, never good. Lots of questions were raised that didn't get answered. Did the wicked characters ever change or have to face consequences of their selfishness? Why did the Uncle appear to change? Was it a temporary change in response to receiving or a deep change? What about Laura's interest in the orphanage? What became of that? Did the orphanage director find her replacement? Did the hero ever explain why he hadn't proposed yet? Also, the issue of being chaperoned was over the top. Always she was met with an atmosphere of suspicion. That negativity got old quickly . Did Laura get right with God and how did that go down? Why didn't the ladies just pay off the loan of the brickyard themselves and manage it? Did the hero become a partner or was he put off again? Also, there was an outright error of the wrong name referred to in one part...can't remember where. Needs to be edited.
A must read for all. There is quite a bit of Christian references, but I believe even non-Christians would enjoying reading this book. A few surprises make the story even better.
This book gives you a true since of what it was like to live in this period of time and what it would be like to be a Brickmaker.
A great love story and romance! It was nice to read a romance that was so believable and was done in a clean and tasteful manner.
I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
Rhonda
Main characters are engaging and make one hope for their eventful happy outcome. One wants to strangle Uncle Hugh and his wife, who create so much unhelpful drama. It makes me grateful that I've never dealt with quite the same challenges.
Who among us has not lived through what we felt were "no-win" circumstance and yet tried to do our best?
This novel is well written.
I have Irish Ancestors of my own (Carlow County to America)...a young lad, age 10, who sold himself as an indentured servant to pay for his passage, about 1700. He later married the daughter of the man who had bought his indenture contract.
