I wondered while reading if Baer was using this text as a commentary about how much society is in our daily life and how little they really should be. Kevin's boss, Dan, instructs him not to wear the shirt again because he co-workers won't take him seriously but in a real world sense, does it matter what he's wearing when he works in the sort of job he does?

As much as I liked Kevin, I found Shannon to be a caricature. She was well written and likable and worked well in the storyline but 100 authors writing a character sketch of a pop star could have come up with the same character. She is a spokesperson for Autism and Aspergers and we're left with a sense that perhaps one of the characters is suffering from Aspergers Syndrome but the answer is left hanging. I would have liked to have known more.

"A Song Apart" is less a love story and more a human story. I was surprised to learn that Baer is a first time novelist. His narrative style and plotting speak to a practiced hand. Each scene is a stepping stone to the next in a very logical sense.

This is an amazing story of a young man trying to find his place in society. Through strange circumstances, he happens upon his singing idol and deals with her fame and fortune. This is a great read and I'm hoping to see a sequel. This is a must-read book for all!
"A Song Apart" is a delightful read that can be recommended to anyone. The story primarily follows the innocent romance between a pop-star named Shannon and her biggest fan, Kevin. Unfortunately, they are unfairly attacked by family, friends, and co-workers due to harsh cultural expectations set by machismo, sexism, and what one is "supposed" to do in life. Despite it all Kevin and Shannon remain likable characters who do not give into the pressures; continuously serving as an example what perseverance can accomplish.

Humor, romance, and drama blend together seamlessly in this excellent novel that I encourage anyone to pick up!
A well-written story for anyone interested in the music industry as told in a boy-meets-girl narrative. The girl is an internationally famous singer, the boy a struggling songwriter working at a grunt job and whose life is complicated by having Asperger's Syndrome, but who's a fighter nonetheless. The book held my interest from the first paragraph on, and I'm a fussy reader. Bravo, Mr. Baer!
Overall this book is very readable and entertaining. Kevin and Shannon have a growing relationship after a chance encounter. The story is told through Kevin, who thinks Shannon is a lot more mature than he is regarding going after what she wants. But being self conscious Kevin seems to let things affect him a lot more than your typical protagonist. There are twists and turns in the plot that seem unrealistic at first, but the author does a good job of restricting the reader's view to what Kevin knows at the time. I did find the ending a bit abrupt, but not unsatisfying. As a love story it works well, as a story about growing up more chapters are needed...a sequel perhaps?
I got to know a pretty interesting guy named Kevin. Poor guy couldn't catch a break. I did like how it all turned out though.
After reading Mr. Baer's first Novel "A Song Apart", I can say it was more than just an enjoying easy read, it was a surprisingly memorable short novel and even a bit thought provoking. We love to crucify our Pop stars and celebrities these days, and we also tend to turn our society misfits into nothing more than Viral Video jokes and distasteful Memes on Facebook; but Baer brings out the humanity of both his chief Characters in Shannon a young rising pop star, and Kevin, a teenager who is a bit of a misfit who is not afraid to express himself and speak his mind even though it often gets him into some very sticky situations. The lives of both characters collide in this original and refreshing novel and we cannot help but grow more affectionate of both characters as the story develops. Baer has a wonderful writing style and way of expressing himself. The fact that I was quite familiar with many of the locations of which Kevin finds himself in New York City only made it that much easier for me to envision and experience. The book never gets boring, and I found myself getting a little emotional at two parts in particular which is a bit rare for me. I am not usually a fan of any novel even hinting of being a romance novel but this book indeed broke the mold and was quite a delight.

I'm highly likely to echo other reviewers here so I will make this quick and to the point. Jeffery H. Baer's "A Song Apart" is a great story, with great characters and a great message. It involves two people nineteen-year-old college student, Kevin, and seventeen-year-old pop-singer Shannon. Both are from very different backgrounds and meet each other in a chance encounter, what follows is a relationship that is tested constantly by the many obstacles surrounding them. I won't go into too much detail as the book's summary provides a clear description of what this story's about. What I will say is the story is well written, it's well told and the characters--especially the two leads are relatable and more importantly--likable. "A Song Apart" takes a good look at the pressures that people face when they become famous, regardless of what industry they are in. It also takes a good look at the pressures that people who are not celebrities but who end up dating people who are. This story reminds me of another book I read a few months ago called "Fixing Sam" (BTW if you're interested I have a review for that book as well), as it also deals with these same pressures. Although some of the plot points did seem a little past believable and the ending felt a bit sudden I still enjoyed the book very much and I look forward to future novels from this author. I recommend this book to anybody who is interested in the music industry, is a fan of pop culture or if by chance has or is dating someone famous as you will easily relate to the pressures faced by the two main characters of this story.
