I've always loved adventure writing and Stratton's book does not disappoint. I easily devoured this book in a couple of days. Each chapter includes a separate adventure with suspense, emotion, and a satisfying conclusion. As one of Stratton's students (10 years ago)these stories were especially meaningful to me. The book suddenly got even more exciting when halfway through a chapter, I realized that one of the stories was about my group! Stratton was very accurate in describing the situation just as I had experienced it a decade ago, with no exaggeration or embellishment. He perfectly captured the emotions surrounding the events. I highly recommend this book to any NOLS graduate, backpacker, or lover of adventure writing.

Teams on the Edge Shawn Stratton 9780991740901 Books Reviews

I chose this book based on the field of work that I have been involved in. Shawn exemplifies a great sense of what it is like to be an outdoor leader. I felt intrigued and interested throughout the whole book. I would highly recommend this book for folks that are outdoor leaders. I loved it!
Shawn Stratton did what too few adventure writers try. He down played his epic adventures. When he said somebody could have died, it wasn't to build tension. It was because a team member had a compound leg fracture in the middle of the Himalaya mountains.

It's a short read, but well worth the time and money for anyone involved in outdoor recreation or education.
Shawn writes in an easy-to-read voice that makes you feel like you are standing over his shoulder... although based on where his stories take place, I personally wouldn't be caught in any of his scenes. A couple times he would not let me put the book down.

As for the lessons he discovered... simple and pure.
Shawn provides real world examples of team building lessons learned from his experiences as an adventure guide. It is an easy, interesting read.
Disclaimer--I'm a student of Shawn's, and thoroughly enjoyed reading his book! Shawn takes the same approach with this book as he did as my instructor every incident is an opportunity for learning and growth. There were times in the book that felt odd, like I was actually in the woods, dirty and hungry, learning about blisters...

As I read the book, what I enjoyed most was seeing the behind-the-scenes world of the instructors. They do paperwork? They get nervous when things go wrong? I had NO idea! Shawn was always so composed...it was amazingly fun to read about everything from his perspective. I'll definitely be sending copies to family members.

It's also priced really well right now for ...get on it!
This book is both captivating and entertaining making it an interesting read. Shawn not only highlights many of his amazing outdoor experiences but connects the reader to the lessons these experiences have taught him. Through telling his story Shawn clearly demonstrates that teams can have a positive or negative experience based on the actions taken by a team or team members. Many people have told me the best way to learn is by doing. This is not necessary true, we learn best through doing and reflecting on what we have done to understand the outcomes we have experienced. Through his own reflections, Shawn helps the reader connect to the lesson he has experienced. This allows the reader to gain insight into the many important aspects that help teams function at a high level. Shawn has done the experience, reflected on it and has shared these lesson with the reader. For those who can not experience the outdoors leading teams like Shawn has, this book will take you into his world and help you understand many of the important dynamics that create successful teams.
I returned this book today (my first ever) after reading it in one sitting. What a waste of whatever price you pay for it (other than for free). The entire book is short in length to begin with and basically details only two incidents the author was a part of in his career as an outdoor education instructor only one of which I felt was interesting. I am an experienced outdoor traveler who has taken a 23 day Outward Bound course and participated in hundreds of nights on long canoeing, rafting and camping trips with groups of students and youths so perhaps I was expecting too much from this author. If 15 or 20 different incidents had been recounted and analyzed then I might have felt the price worthwhile. In addition, much of the text seemed repetitive especially concerning successful teams with very little devoted to building teams.
